Everton and Tottenham blew an opportunity to go second in the Premier League by playing out a lacklustre 0-0 draw on Sunday, while Cardiff beat fierce rival Swansea 1-0 in the English top flights first-ever Welsh derby. Arsenal kept its five-point lead after 10 games following a stalemate at Goodison Park, which raised doubts about the top-four credentials of both Everton and Tottenham. The days other game -- played amid a heavy police presence in south Wales -- was also heading for a goalless draw when Steven Caulker met Craig Bellamys corner with a downward header in the 62nd minute, lifting Cardiff above Swansea in the bottom half of the standings. Swansea was reduced to 10 men in second-half stoppage time when goalkeeper Michel Vorm was given a red card for a professional foul on Fraizer Campbell. With the visitors having used all their substitutes, right back Angel Rangel donned the gloves for the final minutes and was forced into action from the resulting free kick, tipping over Peter Whittinghams effort. Police were on a high alert for a fixture that has been blighted by fan violence in recent years. In 1993, Swansea fans ripped up seats and threw them at Cardiff supporters in violent scenes that led to the game being referred to as the "Battle of Ninian Park." Visiting fans were banned for the next four years. Swansea fans had to travel to the match from their home city on special buses that had a police escort -- a tactic the police call a "bubble trip." The supporters did not receive their match tickets until they were on board one of the buses. The contest appeared to pass off without serious trouble -- and bragging rights will reside in Cardiff until the return match between the rivals on Feb. 8, thanks to Caulkers meaty header. Caulker spent a year on loan at Swansea in the 2011-12 season, and didnt celebrate his goal. "Ive always respected the teams Ive played for," said Caulker, who joined from Tottenham over the summer. "Im a Bluebird now and thankful to get the win for us." Swansea dominated the early exchanges, with Spain forward Michu having two shots saved, but barely threatened after the break. "It is always easy to brag when you are winning, but there is always a next time," Swansea manager Michael Laudrup said. "You have to remember that -- there is always a next time." With second place up for grabs after defeats on Saturday for Chelsea and Liverpool, the Everton-Tottenham match failed to live up to expectations. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested, although Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris was involved in the biggest incident of the match when he was knocked unconscious after his head collided with the knee of Romelu Lukaku in the 77th minute. After a lengthy spell of treatment, it looked like Lloris was about to be substituted but the France captain chose to play on despite medics advising him to leave the pitch. "Hugo still doesnt remember the incident with Lukaku so he lost consciousness there but he seemed assertive and determined to continue and showed great character and personality. We decided to keep him on based on that," Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas said. Tottenham jumped two places to fourth and Everton stayed seventh. Youth Wholesale NFL Jerseys . The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday night because no announcement had been made. Aldersons new deal is expected to be announced in the coming days. Alderson replaced Omar Minaya after the 2010 season, signing a four-year contract with a club option for 2015. Rather than just exercise the option, the Mets are giving Alderson a new deal that keeps him in charge longer. CBSSports.com reported Monday that Alderson and the team agreed to a three-year deal that runs through 2017. Several other media outlets reported earlier that Alderson was coming back and the sides were close to a multiyear extension. Mets manager Terry Collins signed a two-year deal after last season and is expected to return in 2015. New York (76-80) must win five of its six remaining games to avert a sixth straight losing season since moving into Citi Field. The 66-year-old Alderson has pared the payroll from about $133 million in 2010 to less than $92 million on opening day this season. But a thin farm system has improved under his watch, and the Mets appear to be making progress -- at least on the mound.dddddddddddd By trading older players such as Carlos Beltran, R.A. Dickey and Marlon Byrd, Alderson acquired pitcher Zack Wheeler, catcher Travis dArnaud, second baseman Dilson Herrera, reliever Vic Black and top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard. With injured ace Matt Harvey expected back next year, the Mets have the makings of a promising staff that includes Wheeler, NL Rookie of the Year contender Jacob deGrom and young closer Jenrry Mejia. The offence is a different story. Alderson signed All-Star third baseman David Wright to a $138 million, eight-year contract before the 2013 season, and he struggled with an injured shoulder during the worst season of his career this year. Right fielder Curtis Granderson, brought in as a free agent, has 19 homers and 62 RBIs after signing a $60 million, four-year deal. Alderson is expected to be in the market for bats this winter, especially at shortstop and left field. He also has a decision to make about the future of All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy, due a hefty raise in arbitration this off-season. Murphy can become a free agent following the 2015 season.
